Q&A - Shooting in the Field & Technical

QUESTIONS ANSWERED I WEEK 1

  1. Got any tips on recessed lighting? It’s the worst EVER! Thank you!! -Bridget
  2. Any tips for moms who can’t seem to stop smiling at the camera? It seems so deeply ingrained into people to make eye contact and smile at the camera! I find kids easy to distract, but adults are almost worse! (unless you are taking a large family photo, then nobody wants to look!!) - Joanna
  3. Could you talk a bit about what makes “good” light vs “crappy” light? I get the general idea, if there is flat or little light the image will have less life, but I would love to hear you expand on this a bit. Is there any good middle of the day light and why? Is the golden hour always good light? Is there ever a good time for flat light, like formal portraits? Thanks! -Ashley Köstepen
  4. When shooting during meal prep or family meals, what do you look for during those that time with the family? Jenna
  5. How do you know when to stop editing an image? I always try each image as a black and white but in terms of style and crop and toning, I’m stuck. I’ve struggled a lot the last year with my editing style. I just want simple, clean and timeless images. I have abandoned all my fancy and trendy presets but now I just stare at the images not knowing what to do. I never know if the final image is the best version it can be. If that makes sense? Do you have any basic rules for image editing? Thank you! Aminah
  6. I toggle a lot. I’m wondering how you focus & re-compose while keeping your edges set for a clean composition. Jenna Blongiewicz Dallaire
  7. Can you provide best practices when editing side light, I am not sure how much to lift the shadows or when to embrace them.
  8. What focus setting do you use?
  9. When would 3/4 light be “wrong” light from a storytelling perspective?
  10. How can one avoid that one eye stays darker/black when using 3/4 light? Waiting until the subject turns its head / live with it depending on which portion is in the dark?
